Wake up early for a morning flight from Lima to Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire. After settling into your hotel, the afternoon is dedicated to immersing yourself in Cusco's vibrant culture with a captivating city tour. You'll explore the main square, the Cathedral, and the impressive Qorikancha (Temple of the Sun), unraveling the rich history and architectural marvels of this Andean gem.
The morning brings an exploration of Sacsayhuaman, a colossal Inca fortress offering panoramic views of Cusco. In the afternoon, you'll have dedicated time for acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the higher altitude of the Andes. Today marks the beginning of your Salkantay trek. After an energetic breakfast, you'll embark on a journey to the Quillarumiyoc ruins, an ancient Inca ceremonial site. Lunch will be enjoyed in the charming town of Mollepata. From there, a scenic 3-hour hike along the Camino Real will lead you to the welcoming lodge, your comfortable haven amidst the stunning mountain scenery.
Prepare for a breathtaking day as you visit the mesmerizing Humantay Lake, a glacial turquoise lagoon nestled beneath snow-capped peaks. If you wish, you can participate in a traditional Pachamama ceremony, or just enjoy a wonderful lunch and conversation with locals from whom you can learn about their daily lives shaped by the amazing Andean landscape. A refreshing 4-hour hike will allow you to soak in the surrounding beauty, with the afternoon dedicated to well-deserved relaxation at the lodge, perhaps enjoying the views or a hot tub.
This is a challenging yet incredibly rewarding day as you ascend to the majestic Salkantay Pass, standing at an impressive 15,200 feet [4,636 meters] above sea level. Salkantay means “savage mountain” in Quechua, and locals say it hums with energy, making the pass a spiritual milestone for trekkers! The views from the pass are simply awe-inspiring. Following a dramatic descent, you'll embark on a scenic 6-hour hike to Wayra Lodge, where you can unwind after a strenuous but unforgettable day.
Today's trek is a scenic 4-hour descent to Colpa Lodge, taking you through changing landscapes. Upon arrival, you'll be treated to a traditional lunch, fresh fruit, and the warm hospitality of the locals. The afternoon is yours to relax and enjoy the panoramic jungle views from the lodge, a perfect way to rejuvenate amidst nature's embrace.
Embark on a captivating 5-hour hike through the lush Santa Teresa Valley. You'll pass by vibrant fruit orchards, offering a glimpse into local agriculture, and visit a traditional coffee plantation, learning about the bean-to-cup process. Lunch will be enjoyed at the charming Lucma base, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the cloud forest.
Today's journey includes a 2-3 hour climb to Llactapata Pass, where you'll be rewarded with your first spectacular views of Machu Picchu in the distance —a truly unforgettable moment. A descent will lead you to get more immersed in the cloud forest ecosystem, followed by a scenic train ride to Aguas Calientes, the vibrant town at the base of Machu Picchu. A spa appointment can be arranged upon request, perfect for unwinding after the trek.
The highlight of your trip awaits! In the morning, you'll visit the awe-inspiring citadel of Machu Picchu, exploring its ancient temples, terraces, and plazas. For those seeking an extra adventure, a challenging hike up Huayna Picchu offers unparalleled panoramic views of the entire site. In the afternoon, you'll take a comfortable train ride back to Cusco, reflecting on the marvels you've witnessed.
Enjoy a leisurely morning in Cusco, perhaps doing some last-minute souvenir shopping or simply relaxing. Alternatively, activities can be arranged upon request, allowing you to further explore the city or its surroundings. In the afternoon, you'll be transferred to Cusco airport for your flight back to Lima, connecting to your international flight home.
